Hirschmann Masterclass in Bad Ragaz 2020

The 6th Hirschmann Masterclass took place in Bad Ragaz from the 10th until the 16th of October 2020 in collaboration with the cultural representative of the Grand Resort, Sina Sameian. The infrastructure of the Grand Resort proved to be perfect for the classes, the interaction between the participants and the concerts.

15 musicians came to Bad Ragaz to take part in the masterclass: two flautists, one oboist, three pianists, four violinists, two viola players and three cellists. They formed ad hoc new chamber music ensembles for the class as per the instructions of the class director.

The focus was on early 20th century music as well as on contemporary music. In addition, literature from the 18th and 19th centuries was rehearsed. The diversity of the music made the class very appealing to the participants.

A team of seven lecturers were responsible for the masterclasses:

  • Urs Walker, violin
  • Fabio Marano, viola
  • Elsa Dorbath, violoncello
  • Andreas Szalatnay, piano
  • Katarina Gavrilovic, transverse flute
  • Matthias Arter, oboe
  • Xavier Dayer, composer, and lecturer (teaching his own compositions)

The composer Xavier Dayer performed four of his masterpieces. During a lecture, he presented exciting insights of his creative production process. Working with an "active" composer is a special interesting experience and a great asset for the young performers.

The closing concert was held in the Bernhard Simon Hall of the Grand Resort and thrilled the audience, who expressed their gratitude with a great deal of applause.

Pieces by Xavier Dayer, Benjamin Britten, George Benjamin, György Kurtág and Joseph Haydn were presented.
